The basic traffic course

• Before you can take driving lessons or practise driving, you must complete the basic traffic course. The course is mandatory and lasts 17 hours, giving you a basic understanding of what it means to be a driver. You must be at least 15 years old to take it.
• When you have completed the basic traffic course, you receive a certificate that entitles you to practise driving. You must bring the certificate and approved photo ID both when taking lessons with us and when practising privately.
• You can also find the certificate on Your page at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (log in via ID-porten). A printout or photo of the certificate from the website is not valid if you are stopped in a check while practising — you must then log in and show the website. You can of course also show the paper version issued by the Public Roads Administration.
• If you take the practical test between 16 March and 31 October, you can take night driving after the test. Your licence is then valid until 31 January the next year. You must complete night driving and order a new licence before that date. We help you enrol when you take the basic traffic course with us during the light season.
• When you log in to Your page / Your driving licence at the Public Roads Administration, you can also see how far you have progressed in your training.
• On the online certificate on Your page at the Public Roads Administration you can easily see whether night driving is completed and whether the certificate is valid.
• If you have lost your certificate, you can log in at vegvesen.no/dinside and find it there. You can also contact a traffic station where you live to have a new one sent to you.
• If you already hold a driving licence, you do not need to take the basic traffic course.
• If you are over 25, you are exempt from parts of the basic traffic course and may drive without a practice-driving certificate. Always remember to bring ID. First aid and night driving are mandatory for everyone.
