Night driving

• Night driving is a mandatory part of the basic traffic course for learners aged 15 and over. You join as a passenger in a school car while the instructor drives. You also take part in demonstrations at the practice area. You do not need driving experience before the course.
• During the light season you cannot take night driving (road user in the dark) because it is not dark enough outside. If you take the basic traffic course in summer, you can start practising at home even if the night driving is not done — but you then have to return to the driving school between 31 October and 15 March to complete it.
• If you are over 25, you are exempt from the basic traffic course itself, but first aid and night driving are still mandatory. If you take the practical test between 16 March and 31 October, you can take night driving after the test. You must then complete the course and order a new licence by 31 January the next year.
• On the “road user in the dark” course you learn about the use of light in the dark and the importance of using a reflector if you walk or cycle in the dark. You also learn about the car’s different lights and which of them to use both while driving and when parked.
• It is harder to see pedestrians in the dark. The course teaches correct use of lights and why reflectors are important.
• Night driving always takes place in the evening and takes 3 hours to complete. It is important that you wear clothes suited to the weather on the day, as we will be doing activities outdoors for at least one hour regardless of conditions.
